Friends: I write you from Custer, South Dakota, where the weather is dry and cool and the landscape revives my spirits, which have been dampened by the concrete hellscape otherwise known as Orlando, Florida. I’ve been here in Custer doing research. I visited the Black Hills, an area sacred to the Lakota people and other Native Americans, and got to see two of the world’s most iconic mountain sculptures: Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse. I wish I could spend more time out here. There really is something magical about the Black Hills.
