Day 1

by Jeremy Bassetti

It has been a long day floating through non-places: airports, planes, immigration lines, Starbucks lines, duty free shops. But now I’m finally in Bolivia. Outside my hotel, I hear fireworks. I went to the corner store to get a beer (Paceña, for those asking). I asked about the fireworks. The employee tells me it is because today is the Día de la Pachamama, a symbolic shift from winter to summer. But here I rest in my cheap hotel waiting for tomorrow, another long day of travel in more non-places but my first stop in the Andes: Sucre.
